Martin Sheen's plan

(a belated post due to procrastination)

Martin Sheen and his incredibly overdeveloped sense of self-importance.

Martin Sheen is the father of Charlie Sheen so we should all at least listen to him.

At the time I remarked to an enthusiast of the video (I'll bold it because I think it is important) : in the long run it seems like a bad idea to transform the Electoral College from an institution that people expect will represent their vote into an oligarchy that picks the President of the United States based on lobbying by celebrities repeating things.

For the record, those involved in the video (according to this since I suspect some people will not  recognize all of them tho many will not care who they are)  : Martin Sheen, Debra Messing, James Cromwell, BD Wong, Noah Wyle, Freda Payne, Bob Odenkirk, J. Smith Cameron, Michael Urie, Moby, Mike Farrell, Loretta Swit, Richard Schiff, Christine Lahti, Steven Pasquale, Dominic Fumusa, Emily Tyra, Talia Balsam

Watch it and be amazed at the kind of argument that they think is convincing. If someone repeats phrases and says "I stand with you in support and solidarity with ...all citizens of the United States" and if they reference Alexander Hamilton and if they call you a hero and if they repeatedly say you'll have their respect then Martin Sheen would do anything you want!

In the end, there were a total of 7 faithless electors : 2 didn't vote for Trump and 5 didn't vote for Hillary.

transcript of the ad follows:

Martin Sheen (with agitated gesturing) : Republican members of the Electoral College, this message is for you. As you know our founding fathers built the Electoral College to safeguard the American people from the dangers of a demagogue and to ensure that the presidency only goes to someone who is "to an eminent degree, endowed with the requisite qualifications."

Debra Messing : "an eminent degree," someone who is highly qualified for the job.

James Cromwell : The Electoral College specifically to prevent an unfit candidate from becoming President.

B.D. Wong : There are 538 members of the electoral College. You

Noah Wyle : and just 36 other conscientious Republican Electors can make a difference

brunette woman : by voting you conscience on December 19th

Bob Odenkirk : And thereby shaping the future of our nation

older blond woman : I'm not asking you to vote for Hillary Clinton.

young guy : I'm not asking you to vote for Hillary Clinton.

Moby : I'm not asking you to vote for Hillary Clinton.

Mike Farrell (B.J. Hunnicutt on MASH) : As you know the Constitution gives Electors the right to vote for any eligible person.

Martin Sheen (frantically gesturing) : Any eligible person, no matter which party they belong to

Debra Messing : but it certainly should be someone you consider especially competent

very old blond woman : especially competent to serve as President of the United States of America

old guy in glasses : by voting you conscience, you and other brave Republican Electors can give the House of Representatives the option to select a qualified candidate for the Presidency

Bob Odenkirk : I stand with you

Christine Lahti : I stand with you

Steven Pasquale (looking really creepy) : I stand with you

middle aged guy : I stand with you in support and solidarity with conservatives, independents and liberals

young woman : and all citizens of the United States

Moby : the American people trust that your voice speaks for us all

brunette woman : and that you, you will make yourself heard through the constitutional responsibility granted to you by Alexander Hamilton himself

Mike Farrell :  What is evident is that Donald Trump lacks more than the qualifications to be President.

Debra Messing : He lacks the necessary stability

James Cromwell : and clearly the respect of the Constitution of our great nation

asian guy : You have a position

older woman in glasses : the authority

Martin Sheen (with more restrained gesturing) : and the opportunity to go down in the books as an American hero

old guy in glasses : who changed the course of history

Mike Farrell : and you have my respect

Steven Pasquale (looking really creepy) : you have my respect

Noah Wyle : you have my respect

older blond woman : for your patriotism

Martin Sheen (with his fingers locked together) : service to the American people (note this appears to be a clause unrelated to the previous sentence) Unite for America
