A man caught carrying a large gobstopper in a sock has been fined £400 after it was found to be an offensive weapon.

His defense defence argued that the sweet was "a substantial piece of confectionary" which could be eaten but he also said that he needed it for protection after he was attacked. Note that he was not accused of using it to hurt anyone or threaten anyone with it.

"Hard, suckable things illegal in Scotland" would have been a better headline.
